Purple Playbill Auditions

In partnership with Brighter Tomorrows, Stage Writers is seeking local actors for our Purple Playbill event, which will take place at Unity of Dallas on Saturday, October 19th. Actors of any gender/ethnicity are encouraged to audition. If chosen, the actor will perform a dramatic staged reading of a short play (15-minute or less).

WHEN: Thursday, October 3rd, 6pm-9pm

WHERE: Lakewood United Methodist Church
2443 Abrams Rd | Dallas, TX | (map)

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the festival scripts. Actors are encouraged (but not required) to bring or email a resume and headshot. No appointments are necessary.

At least one rehearsal will take place during the week of October 12-18, and a final rehearsal will take place in the venue on the day of the event. Therefore, actors must have no conflicts on Saturday, October 19th.

Actors’ names will be listed in the event program and on the Stage Writers website.

On October 19th, between the final rehearsal and public performance, dinner will be provided.

Additionally, the plays performed at the Purple Playbill event will be voted on by the audience. The playwright who wrote the one play that receives the most audience votes will be awarded a $500 cash prize. Likewise, the director and cast of the winning play will also receive a $500 cash prize to be divided between themselves. Directors must inform the actors how the prize money will be divided PRIOR to the Purple Playbill event. No stipends will be given to the casts of the non-winning plays.

Each play in the festival will be performed as a dramatic staged reading.

What it is not: These will not be full productions. There will not be complete sets, props, costuming, nor memorized lines. These will also not be standard staged readings, where the actors sit/stand behind music stands.

What it is: These will be dramatic readings. The actors will read/act from the script in hand. There should be blocking, where the actors move around the stage as if this were a full production. Minimal props/costuming are allowed but not required.
